The Selwyn Sports Trust's hugely successful leadership programme has been expanded in Term 3 to include a select group of students from Rolleston College.
“We’re working with Rolleston College to pilot our Whakatipu Kaihautū Leadership Programme with Emelia, Josh and Henry who are three students from the College who have a real interest in sports and physical activity” Commented Kate Lloyd, PLD Lead for the Selwyn Sports Trust.
Lloyd delivers the Whakatipu Kaihautū Leadership Programme for the Trust, and the focus since its inception has been on Year 6 students from the 25 Invested Schools who connect with the Trust.
“The fundamentals of the programme are all about growing and supporting young leaders to reach their potential using sport and physical activity within their school setting. We give them the tools to lead their peer inside their own schools, and also during the cluster events we run during the year when connecting with Kura in the Selwyn region” added Lloyd.
The expansion of the programme, as a pilot, will allow the Selwyn Sports Trust to assess the opportunity to deliver a more comprehensive programme in 2024.
“We are working with Emelia, Josh and Henry to identify what their learning objectives are, and then we connect them to our staff, programme and events to ensure we achieve these objectives. The content is more extensive that our Year 6 programme, but the principles of leadership don’t change” commented Lloyd.
The Selwyn Sports Trust are piloting a number of secondary school/rangatahi programmes with a view to delivering a new rangatahi strategy in 2024.
