Wheelchair basketball is an inclusive game that anyone can play. There will be one division and teams are encouraged to have at least 1 player with a disability and/or one female player per team.  The tournament will be played entirely on TUESDAY. Round robin games will be played giving final seeding for the finals. The games will start from approximately 9:15am.

The Koru Games 3×3 Basketball competitions will be played under the FIBA Rules of the Game.

1. ​​​​​Each team will have a minimum of 3 players with a maximum of 4 players. This is an inclusive sport and anyone can play regardless of gender or level of ability. Teams are strongly encouraged to have at least 1 player with a disability and/or one female player per team.
2. Games will be played on a half court using the court outline and the 3 point line as the most important markings.
3. A coin toss or paper-scissors-rock to decide which team starts with the ball.
4. To start the game a player from the attacking team starts with the ball in the middle of the court at the three point line. The attacking player passes the ball to a defender who then passes the ball back to the attacker. This is called ‘checking’ the ball and is the signal to start the game.
5. Successful shots are worth 1 point, a shot from outside the 3 point line is worth 2 points. 
6. Free throws are worth 1 point each.
7. This is a low-contact game and a foul will be called when the referee deems there to be avoidable or unnecessary contact between players or their chairs. Fouls while shooting will result in 1 free throw. Non-shooting fouls will result in a game rest by checking the ball in the middle of the court at the three point line. There is no limit on individual fouls. Team fouls will be counted and after 9 team fouls each subsequent foul will result in 2 free throws.
8. If the ball goes out of bounds, the game is reset by checking the ball in the middle of the court at the three point line.
9. After a made basket, the team that made the basket must not touch the ball and the non-scoring team must get the ball behind the 3 point line before they can attack and shoot the ball. This is called ‘clearing’ the ball. At least one wheel must be behind the 3 point line.
10. Games last for 12 minutes with a running clock. If the scores are tied at the end of 12 minutes, the first team to score 2 points wins.
11. Substitutions can happen by either team any time the ball becomes dead or at the referees discretion.
12. There is no double dribbling. Carrying the ball on your lap is allowed but players can use 2 or 3 pushes before they need to dribble, pass or shoot before pushing their chair again.
13. All games will be played in the spirit of fair play and inclusion. Players should have roughly the same length of time on court and players will shake hands or bump fists before and after each game.
14. There will be no warming up with basketballs within the Rec Centre due to limited space. You will be able to warm up/practise on the outdoor half court.

The tournament will play round robin games in pools with play-off games for final placings and awards for the values of inclusion basketball.

● Manaakitanga – showing empathy, understanding and care for others.
● Kotahitanga – playing with a spirit of love and enjoyment of the game.

Sports wheelchairs and balls will be provided. Players are welcome to bring their own wheelchairs but are strongly encouraged to use a sports wheelchair to reduce the risk of tipping backwards during games. Powerchair users are permitted to participate in their own powerchairs if they are unable to use a self-propelled chair.

Schools are asked not to bring additional balls into the centre due to the lack of space available and the disruption caused by large numbers of balls in the small space.

We are committed to using this tournament as a development for youth officials.  Each team will need their own referee and whistle, we encourage you to use senior student referees from your School or a Highschool near you.  Otherwise a parent/caregiver/coach will be great. Upskilling can happen prior to the tournament for those that need it.

All teams/schools need to have first aid support onsite.

Habit Health will be at the Rolleston Hub to support competitors throughout the Games.
